the old neighbourhood

ok, this is a song from the long ago first cassette. i know that some of you already have this, but a fellow was asking about it at the shows last weekend and i promised i’d put it up. and yes, i still live in the same hood. this song also acknowledges my lifelong debt to sesame street.

  1. Hah. I know this song thanks to that incredible Life Saver package… we should have more like those.

  2. That cassette is very hard to find. A while ago I got a parcel and low and behold, in it was an absolutely mint copy of “Songs About People And Buildings”. A gift from a friend. Very nice and cool.

Anyhow, great that you share so many songs with us Veda. Merry christmas everybody!

  3. i first heard this song at the vancouver folk festival when you were a wee lass and my daughter was a wee, wee lass…loved it from the moment i heard it!! my daughter grew up with this version of sesame st…thank god! cheers, lulu

  4. Veda, I’m the “fellow who was asking about the Neighbourhood Song” at your recent concert at the Cultch. I first heard you sing this song shortly after you composed it and I’m thrilled to hear it again now, especially since I’ve just moved to the hood. Thanks for this, and for taking us on your musical roller coaster ride, with lyrics and music that are always refreshingly quirky, whimsically raucous and oh so authentic!
Cheers! Egon Simons, on the Drive

  5. Hey, my daughter recently asked if we still had you’re first cassette “songs about people and buildings” that she used to listen to all the time, so i started looking and realized that it was no where to be found. She ask me for a new one for Christmas and i know it would mean a lot to her if i could find one. I know it’s out of print but do you know anyone who might have one and be willing to sell it? Please email me back as soon as possible. Thank you.

  6. hello paul. i don’t have any cassettes left, but i do have the record on cd. i could burn you one if you like. email me at vh@vedahille.com and we can work out the details. merry christmas!

  7. Dear Vede, So glad this is here – I was thinking about the song today as my new neighbourhood reminds me of the old neighbourhood… I was trying to remember the words and lo and behold here it is… from a million miles away ox
