this is june

this is how i feel this morning. which is nice. little. lazy reading sunday with coffee and rain outside. a day with only the pressing task of grocery shopping, something i enjoy mightily.

we went out to the opening of the vancouver jazz feston friday to see aki takase performing her fats waller project with a truly incredible band. (with eugene chadbourne on banjo and vocals!) what a show! a perfect mix of joint jumping plus head twisting. i’m going to track down the record immediately. there are more shows for them in canada, check out her website above, or eugene’s. it was great.

in home news i’m working steadily on the life support packages. the dining table is a riot of prize ribbon detritus. oh, and there’s a new show scheduled for vancouver on july 24th at the chapel. with a band from calgary called azeda booth. the chapel is a new venue in town, an old funeral home in the downtown eastside. a beautiful art deco building. i have high hopes for it, we sure need more places to see music in this town.

and for all you folks outside of vancouver, there are plans for touring next year. canada, usa, uk, and europe. my homebody self will be banished in 2008. and by then i’ll be dying to play, so it works out well i think. this is a nice year of recharge over here.

ok, happy sunday to you all. xv

tricky

hello there folks. so, it seems that something in this site is working against the ease of buying records. it’s like i’m battling myself, in the age old comic book metaphysical struggle. anyway, we’re working on it. right now, the best thing seems to be to keep trying. the site might try to foil you at checkout, by saying you have nothing in your basket, or by asking for a mysterious 4 digit code. believe me, i’m mystified. but people who perservere can still get through. sorry for lameness.

in better news, i have finished my taxes as well as a host of other office-like duties. so i will finally return to more musical pursuits, and this blog will reflect that i promise. xv

finally some fodder

hello gangland

at last, some evidence that i exist. and that i still play the piano. barely feels like it, since i’m immersed in taxtime, but there you go. these photos were taken by lee su-feh at the caravan farm this past may. we are working on a musical about cannibalism. this is billy, tanya, jeff, and lesley singing along with me at the piano in the cookshack. a song based on the writings of levinas. and steve is “directing”, and katherine and molly and stefan are cheering us on/drinking wine. it was a grand time. doesn’t it look like the 70s?

in other news, tracking on the new album is almost finished, and we begin mixing in july. still planning a release in early 2008. we are also working on getting the rights to the concert with the cbc radio orchestra. i’d love to release that this fall if at all possible. fingers crossed. oh, and one of my favorite records of last year, john southworth’s The Pillowmaker, is finally available at cd baby. the sweetest songs.

a question for you computer savvy types out there: suddenly there’s a bunch of spam getting into the comments on the site. 2 or 3 a day. anyone know how to spiffy up the blockage on wordpress? it was doing so well for so long. i’m sorry if some of these nastyspam are getting to you folks.

ok, and don’t forget the fits are playing with wax mannequin this saturday at rime. we have a new finale, look out.
