    Many Listening People
Posted by Li Robbins on February 12, 2008 at 12:00 AM
Tuesday evening’s Canada Live (8 p.m.) broadcast has three concerts — and the third features Veda Hille from the recent Winnipeg New Music Festival.

CBC Radio commissioned Veda Hille to write a new work for the festival, a choral-based piece she named The Raft Of The Medusa. She also performs in it herself, at the piano, with the University of Manitoba Singers, at Westminster United Church. Here’s how Ms. Hille described the premiere:

“The show last night at the winnipeg new music festival went very well. westminster is a gorgeous wooden church, and it was filled with many listening people. all the choirs had odd and adventurous music for us, and my songs with the University of Manitoba choir were basically a joy to perform.”

This concert will be preceded several fine Winnipeg based artists, first, Christine Fellows, who I’ve praised in the past, and will praise again — like Veda Hille, she’s an original. On this occasion she played to a near capacity crowd at the West End Cultural Centre — on stage with viola, cello and bass, plus piano, drums, guitar, ukelele and toy xylophone.

And between these two shows, an event recorded last fall in connection with the Glenn Gould celebrations. Winnipegers and roots musicians Danny Koulack and Richard Moody performed live in-studio original pieces based on GEGD, the musical letters of Glenn Gould’s name. Note, this performance is also available as a Concert On Demand.

  2. On demand, my dears!

Phew, now we can all stop worrying about times, time differences etcetera and just feast our ears on the whole concert.

Nice photo of you there too, Veda. Is that the famous hymnbook on the chair next to you?

  3. Wow, I am listetning right now to “This Spring”. Thanks for the link Fran.

  4. Wow, thanks for the link, Fran!

Will listen to all the songs tonight, as I go back home (can’t wait!).

And agreed that that is a great pic of Veda!

  5. Listetning? Where did I get that word from? It doesn´t even mean anything in Swenglish! Alright, I just wanted to say that “The Raft of the Medusa” is a beautiful piece of music. Cool also to hear “This Spring” but I actually avoid listening (!) too much to the tracks that will be on “The Riot Life”. I´m afraid it can take away an important part of the experience when getting into a new album…

  6. Per, I agree wholeheartedly.

“The Raft of Medusa” is not even from this planet!

A strong contender for best song of 2008!

I am so mesmerized by Veda’s music at this point, that I wish that all these concerts became an individual album.

By the way, I loved this new version of “The Moon”, with but voice and piano! You’re playing the piano much faster, Veda. It’s more legato during the intro than the first version you released (which was “staccato-ish”).

Singing and playing that one piece at the same time must be very difficult.

Awesome stuff there! Thanks as always!

    Rafael

  7. that is not the famous hymnbook, fran, the famous hymnbook is much more unassuming. that\’s a beautiful old encyclopedia that my photographer had lying around. but the idea is the same. and thanks all, i\’m glad you like Raft. i was pleased with the recording. just to mention again, ford pier wrote the arrangement for the choir.
as for the moon, raff, voice and piano is how it was written. i\’m a bit clumsy on this performance, but not as bad as i feared. r murray schafer was in the audience! i haven\’t listened to that piece yet, but live it was truly stunning.

  8. I’m afraid I’m going to have to say that The Raft of the Medusa really floats my boat!

And now that I’ve got that pathetic attempt at wit out of my system… wow, what a wonderful piece. With all the talk of cannibalism, I wasn’t expecting great lashings of Eliot, but the Four Quartets are always very welcome in my world & the “I said to my soul…” section is especially lovely. Much rapturous applause for Veda & her wizard arranger! And the choir of course. And the nice people at CBC.

  9. I have the classical version to this piece, so, I know it’s voice and piano.

Don’t think your rendition is clumsy the least. I love it. I am actually a bit obsessed with it;-).

    Take care,

    Rafael

  10. Whoa!!!

Two songs from the new album on Veda’s myspace page!!!!

  11. Ah, Veda, are your sure you were born on this planet?

“Book Of Saints” sends me anyway away on an orbit aorund my soul. Sorry, there I stole a few words from an Andy P song. But it´s true. Once again am I totally unprepared to be so emotionally moved.

Just absolutely fantastic! I wonder what will happen when the whole album hit my system…

  12. Well, Per, I have a theory: either Veda is going for complete world ruling / domination or she is trying to make me have a heart attack.

These songs are excellent — and I am not exagerating. They touch on too many levels to even start describing…!

    Can’t wait for the album…

  13. Rafael, I have several times found it almost scary not being able to control the way Vedas music affects me. But of course it isn´t. It´s just fantastic.

Next week will be a riot week! Will I still be an atheist after that? He, he…

Oh, and I listened again today to Vedas Buffy-stuff. I really hope that show get a proper release becuase it is such a wonderful performance.
