busy busy

oh, i’ve been a lame blogger. lameblogger. i was reading about Pioneer Woman in the new yorker. she posts EVERY DAY AT 6AM. or something like that. but, I WILL NEVER BE LIKE THAT. oh well. who wants to live on a ranch, anyway.

so, a quick update. i am furiously writing new emily carr songs for the victoria symphony project. ford and giorgio are doing stunning orchestrations. i do hope we can take this to at least a few other places. if anyone has any friends who run a symphony, feel free to drop my name. also in the works: the final writing days for the Craigslist Cantata, which is going up at the arts club next january (a co-pro with the push festival). and then going on tour! next week i start recording the Peter Panties record with the Bank Dogs, a band of teenage boys who are taller and more skilled every day. also, the city of vancouver just gave some money towards a new project called Songs of the False Creek Flats, which i will be writing with Annabel Vaughan my new architect pal. that’ll go up in september. plus i’ve been coaching the teenager in how to ace a job interview, and playing dentist with the toddler (more fun than it sounds). so there, there’s all my lame excuses.

i’ll find a nice picture for the next post. promise.

come on springtime

man, the chickadee action around here has been off the hook lately. they’re nesting, they’re fighting, they’re humping in midair. this is a photo taken by my friend jenny. i’ll just pretend it looks like this outside today.

we open Dress Me Up at the Shadbolt tonight, running through till saturday. this show will be touring in europe next spring too. that’ll probably mark my next round of solo shows as well, and shows with symphonies if i can grab them. and next week, it’s Peter Panties The Rock Show! a reunion of VH and the Bank Dogs and the amazing cast of PP at the Wise Hall, singing songs from the show and more. that’s on thursday the 5th.

ok, i have to go and take my stuff to the cleaners. and that is not a metaphor.

carry on carry on

oh, that was a fun time at smorgasbord last night. dan mangan, charlie demers, mike mcgee, the crackling, aidan knight (who looks eerily like my brother, when my brother was 9; i was mesmerized) and our tuba playing mayor gregor. of course, funnest because of the 1200 people in the crowd. and because we raised a bunch of cash for at-risk youth. thank you to the beautiful church St Andrews Wesley. i think that’s a good place.

and now, ramping up for the opening of Dress Me Up In Your Love on tuesday. this is a good show. i have made a lot of comments about how you will see me in my underwear in this one; i must retract them now. barb clayden has made me a stunning dress which pins me to the set. come see. plus, madonna covers! kind of. come to the cultch or the shadbolt, and be prepared to reminisce about your favourite clothing.

field study sweaterlodge

this thursday, april 7, come to the museum of vancouver at 7pm. i’ll be playing field study with video by shawn chappelle under the magnificent Sweaterlodge by pechet and robb. i haven’t played this in 5 years! i’ve had to practice. it’s feeling pretty fresh.

dress me up, dress me up

the lovely folks at theatre replacement gave us a day off of rehearsal today, so i can finally report that the show is coming along gangbusters. coming up fireworks. singing its liver out. plus showing lots of asscheek. come see us at the cultch, opening april 19, or at the shadbolt, opening april 27, or in europe next spring.

shows shows shows

hey gang. i just added a whole whack of shows to the shows page. shows shows shows. this is the poster for one of them. apparently our mayor will play the tuba! other shows include: field study at the museum of vancouver, peter panties at the wise hall, being writerly with ivan coyote, and in the fall a new symphonic rendition of the emily carr songs. i have some preparation to do. finally my past is haunting me properly.

advice

anyone know a good place to go for sunday breakfast with a 2 year old in tow? in victoria?

Victoria, Victoria

i’m gearing up for an entire week in the lovely port city of Victoria. i love a holiday gig. this sunday, march 6, i’ll be playing the emily carr song cycle (first time ever as a solo piece!) at the victoria art gallery. show is at 1pm and seating is intimate, so i’d get there a little early. and then from wednesday the 9-sunday the 13 you can catch the still-in-process Craigslist Cantata at the Belfry Theatre’s Spark Festival. with selina martin, david adams, allan zinyk, and meghan gardiner! and me.

while not on stage you’ll probably find me in the city archives, at rebar, or staring balefully at the giant mammoth. that’s still there, right?

peter panties away we go

we exist in the world.

out shout

big ups to everyone who worked on Happy Birthday Teenage City and Trampoline Hall last weekend. i feel like i’ve been trampled by glamourous rhinos. so. much. fun. thanks all!

now gearing up for peter panties, opening thursday. rock it out.
