and july

hallo folks. due to some misadventures with publicity timing the chapel show has been cancelled, alas. but you can still go see azeda booth at the railway club on july 22. i hope to be there, downing a celebratory martini after finishing the mix for This Riot Life. we start on monday, i’m very excited. and as colin sets up the songs every day i’ll be working on the prize ribbons. i’ll mail out the first round of life support packages at the end of the month.

what else? i’ve just finished a film with ivan coyote called The Love That Won’t Shut Up. it’s about queer history in vancouver, and was commissioned by Out On Screen, our gay film fest. the film will play at the Vancity Theatre on august 24th, and ivan and i will both perform at the screening. another OOS event: John Cameron Mitchell is coming!!! I’m very excited, and hope to meet him.

what else? (or: Why Haven’t I Been Posting?) i’m working with the leaky heaven circus on a show about cannibalism, i just made a pilot/pitch to host a cbc show about cabaret, there’s an opera in the offing, i’m making music for some ice dancing choreographed by jennifer mascall, and the fits have learned the Tom Lehrer song the elements. oh, and i’m reading the new annie dillard book the maytrees. she slays me.

and a few days ago, we wrangled 4 guinea pigs out of our back yard. it’s non-stop adventure around here folks. i better get out of the computer room and see what’s going on now. xx v (more…)

finally some fodder

hello gangland

at last, some evidence that i exist. and that i still play the piano. barely feels like it, since i’m immersed in taxtime, but there you go. these photos were taken by lee su-feh at the caravan farm this past may. we are working on a musical about cannibalism. this is billy, tanya, jeff, and lesley singing along with me at the piano in the cookshack. a song based on the writings of levinas. and steve is “directing”, and katherine and molly and stefan are cheering us on/drinking wine. it was a grand time. doesn’t it look like the 70s?

in other news, tracking on the new album is almost finished, and we begin mixing in july. still planning a release in early 2008. we are also working on getting the rights to the concert with the cbc radio orchestra. i’d love to release that this fall if at all possible. fingers crossed. oh, and one of my favorite records of last year, john southworth’s The Pillowmaker, is finally available at cd baby. the sweetest songs.

a question for you computer savvy types out there: suddenly there’s a bunch of spam getting into the comments on the site. 2 or 3 a day. anyone know how to spiffy up the blockage on wordpress? it was doing so well for so long. i’m sorry if some of these nastyspam are getting to you folks.

ok, and don’t forget the fits are playing with wax mannequin this saturday at rime. we have a new finale, look out.

another excuse

and another reason the blogging has been slow is that i’ve added a new page to the site, a must-see for fashionistas around the world. what we’re wearing is a new and passionate look at style, shot lovingly in kitchens and other low light situations. (more…)

buffy show

as carmen so kindly pointed out in comments, you can listen to the buffy/veda/cbc orchestra show here at your leisure. and rehearsal pictures by matthew mcfarlane! i am working on buying the rights to this, so that i can release it. giorgio magananensi wrote the arrangements, and they are stunning. we may do more next year, if i am lucky. cbc orchestra and me

hey gang i played a show on april 15 with the cbc radio orchestra, and it’s being aired tomorrow may 2 at 8pm in canada on radio 2. i imagine you can get it on the ol internet as well, check here for details. i sang songs by buffy st marie, and you also get ron sexsmith singing gordon lightfoot, marc dery singing serge fiori, and sarah slean singing joni mitchell. i am very proud of this performance. hope you get a chance to check it out. emerge blinking in the sun

and so here we are, crawling out of a week in studio. people, we are making a good record! i don’t want to overhype anything, but the band is all feeling kinda chuffed. “best one yet”, folks are saying. time will tell, but it was certainly an intense and fun time. we go in again in may to work on horns, casio parts, vocals, and the formidable guitar stylings of the ford pier. i’m actually experiencing a bit of post-recording melancholy, because it is my favorite part. but i have other things to work on for a bit. we are playing a gig on may 6th at the wise hall if anyone happens to be in vancouver. cbc will record it too, and i’ll let you know when it will be aired.

and thanks so much to all who have joined the Life Support System. i am very close now to having enough money to finish the record! there are still some memberships left (see 2 blogs ago for details) if you want to help out/get stuff. but it is very nice to know that you all care about the new music, and that i can hire the horn players that i like, to know that i’m not doing this in a lonely void. all that.

ok, now i’m going to go play badminton. til soon xv (more…)

day one in studio

it is a beautiful spring morning and i’m about to hop on my bike and go make a record. i just wanted to say thanks to all the people who joined the Life Support System yesterday. we sold almost 30 memberships in 10 hours! it is very gratifying to know how much you all care. a real boost for my first day in studio.

now, i spoke to one friend on the phone and she sent me a “count me in” email yesterday that hasn’t arrived. sometimes the electronic path is thorny, i suppose. if you send a life support system request and you haven’t had a response or an invoice within 48 hours, please check in again.

alright, now wish me luck with the gods of digital music documentation. that just doesn’t sound as good as “the gods of 2 inch tape”, but what can you do. we live now, most certainly. xx v (more…)

life support

hello friends. warning: what follows is a blatant pitch for cash, albeit in exchange for some interesting goodies and a noble sense of patronage.

i am just about to start making my new record, This Riot Life. it’s a big project, with 14 songs and 12 great musicians. we’re all working together in the studio, with 2 drummers, bass, strings, horns, a small choir, and ford pier who is his own category. it has the makings of an epic project, and i’m raring to go.

there is a small problem though; I don’t have enough money to entirely realize this album the way i would like to. i will find a way, of course. part of that way-finding is offering you a chance to “get involved”. what does that mean? why, that means that for the low low price of $99.95 you can be a member of the Life Support System! here’s what you get:

-one of the very first copies of This Riot Life when it is complete*, signed and numbered.
-a special limited edition live version of Field Study, recorded january 28.07 with a 7 piece ensemble, also signed and numbered.
-a 5 song ep of songs from This Riot Life (studio demos and live recordings), available almost a year before the album comes out.
-a prize ribbon, handmade by me.
-and wait, there’s more! as a bonus, you get one other veda hille record of your choice. if you choose one of the early or out-of-print records it will be a burned copy with approximate artwork (drawn by me!).

and all for the low low price of $99.95! we are only making 100 of these packages, so act now! just send an email to payment@vedahille.com giving us your mailing address and choice of bonus record. we’ll send you a paypal invoice** and bingo! you’ll be in The System!

below is a rebroadcast of plants, as part of the Field Study Life Support Album. thanks for listening, and have a lovely day.

x veda

*The planned release date for This Riot Life is spring of 2008, so your copy would be mailed to you early in 2008. The rest of the Life Support package will be mailed out in July of 2007.

**you can also mail a cheque along with a letter detailing your request to ball of flames, box 4763, Vancouver BC, V6B 4A4. vive le snail mail! (more…)

last weekend

i haven’t written yet about my show with the cbc radio orchestra on sunday, perhaps because i am still reeling. i sang buffy st marie songs with beautiful arrangements by giorgio magnanensi. it was a stunning experience for me. to play with so many people with such singular intent, as arranged by giorgio and conducted by alain trudel, and of course written by buffy. it was a rare chance for me to perform more simply. to act more like a vessel or a conduit. i loved it. the show will be aired on cbc2 on may 2 and will also be streamed online. i’ll get the details and post them for you.

in the meantime, rehearsals for the album recording are fully underway. we begin on monday! (more…)
